課程概述

Positioned as one of the capstone courses in the environmental economics module, the course will take a deep dive into the contemporary empirical methods of nonmarket valuation, including contingent valuation, discrete choice experiments, recreation demand, hedonic property value models, and health valuation. Students will assume the role of instructor helping their fellow colleagues to learn one method of their choice.

The course will include a team project for students to learn about conducting in-person stated preference surveys for valuing nonmarket environmental goods. We are currently planning for a 7-day fieldwork in the Mount Hehuan area in the third week of June, 2024. The focus of the project will be surrounding this upcoming change: https://www.cna.com.tw/news/aloc/202311040175.aspx

We will still be meeting during the spring semester at least six times to talk about some theories and models. However, it is imperative for students to have prior knowledge on nonmarket valuation such as materials covered in Applied Discrete Choice Analysis. Students without sufficient prior knowledge MUST consult the instructor for preparation.

課程目標
Upon completing the course, students are expected to gain hands-on experience in valuing nonmarket environmental goods using state-of-the-art methods.
課程要求
1) Student-led lectures: 20%*
2) Mid-term property value model exercise: 20%
3) Final field project (individual component): 30%**
4) Final field project (team component): 30%**

* Students are asked to lead the lecture for one of the valuation methods (contingent valuation, discrete choice experiment, recreation demand, hedonic property value, or health and avoidance behaviors).
** Students' eligibility to join the field team is contingent upon meeting the first two requirements and is subject to the discretion of all team members.
